Birr Hurlers To Be Special Guests At Offaly Association Function

Member of the Birr team which reached the AIB All-Ireland club hurling final will be special guests at the Offaly Association, Dublin's annual dinner dance at the Regency Hotel in Whitehall, Dublin on April 5th next.
The club is expected to represented by captain Brian Whelahan, among others, and the Sean Robbins, Leinster Championship and Offaly Club of the Year trophies garnered by Birr in 2007 will be on display.
Although the Tommy Moore Cup would have been a another welcome guest, the Offaly Association felt it would have been remiss not to recognise Birr's achievement in reaching the biggest day on the club calendar and thereby restoring pride to Offaly GAA, even if the final didn't pan out as hoped against Portumna.
It promises to be a great night of celebration for Birr with local man Stephen Grant to be honoured as Offaly Person of the Year for 2007.
Tickets for the function, priced at €50, are still available from chairman Martin Delaney (086) 6028345, secretary/PRO Pat Nolan (087) 6101773, president Liam Leogue (086) 2475567 or any committee member.

On Tuesday 8th April the Film Club is screening 'Night of the Sunflowers' (La Noche de los Girasoles). This Spanish language film directed by Jorge Sánchez-Cabezudo is an engrossing thriller set in an isolated rural town in northern Spain which begins with the discovery of a young woman’s body in a field. The director’s cleverly constructed screenplay explores the consequences, through six overlapping chapters in which events are observed from different perspectives. This imaginative and intricately structured drama is satisfyingly tantalising – truly appropriate for a film in which one of the main themes is the deceptiveness of appearances.

Rath And Eglish Foroige Take To The Stage

Rath and Eglish Foroige Group present 'The Life And Times Of Tommy Joe Ryan'  in Rath and Eglish community centre on Friday 28th March at 8p.m.
This is a comedy play set in the late 50s and early 60s based on the story of a bachelor Tommy Joe Ryan who was spoiled by his sister Masie who did all his cooking, washing and cleaning. Due to other commitments for Masie this is about to change but she is worried as to how Tommy Joe will manage. She comes to the conclusion that if Tommy Joe gets a wife this would sort all her worries so she decided to engage the local match maker Paddy Reilly.
After interviewing Tommy Joe the match maker thinks that he has the perfect woman for him so he arranges a meeting between them. However, due to the apparent ill health and a very weird habit of Biddy Power, Tommy Joe decides that she is not for him but he is not going to give up, he is going to be more adventurous and go to a dance in the local hall with the view of meeting a woman. Unfortunately he has no luck here either.
At this stage Tommy Joe decides to emigrate and leave his nephew Frankie in charge of his estate. After an enjoyable American wake Tommy Joe says his good-byes and leaves for the shores of America.
Some time passes and to the disappointment of his nephew, Tommy Joe returns home. However his home coming did not last long as his much looked forward Irish breakfast with Tullamore sausages and Barrys tea proved not to be as sweet as he had hoped and resulted in tragedy.
His nephew does not lose any time until he is making plans for the sale of his inheritance, but alas there is a big surprise in store for him at the funeral.
Get along to Rath and Eglish community centre on Friday 28th March at 8p.m. and enjoy the fun.

Birr RFC Youth Rugby

Birr Under 14’s Progress To Quarter Final
Birr U-14's travelled to Rathoath to compete in the second round of the U-14 McGowan cup. Conditions were terrible and the Birr team knew that it was going to be a tough encounter?  Birr started the game brightly putting Rathoath under a lot of pressure but for a long time they failed to convert this pressure into points until the Birr backs put a series of good passes together and Fionn Feehan touched down in the corner to finish off a good try. Joseph O'Connor added the extra two points kicking what was a difficult conversion with the conditions?  Birr then settled into the game and some good forward play by Birr led to Peter Dooley going over the line for a try and again Joseph O'Connor added the extra to leave the score at 14-0.?  Birr were dominating in every area and were playing some good rugby considering the conditions and Sean T. O'Connor showed what great pace he had to sprint to the corner and go over for another try leaving the score 19-0 at half time. ?  Birr continued to play well in the second half but a series of missed passes and unforced errors meant that many tries went abegging for Birr. Rathoath put Birr under fierce pressure in the last five minutes and tried hard to score but great Birr defence kept Rathoath out and the final score was 19-0?  Birr now will play Dundaly on April 5th in the U-14 McGowan Cup Leinster Cup Quarter Final in Birr and no doubt they will look forward to this encounter.?  Panel: Michael Kenny, Jordan Parsons, Eoin Loughman, Kevin O'Connor, Eoin Hayes, Billy Connors, Maurice Guinan, Peter Dooley, Graham Lynch, Conor Fitzgerald, Michael Kennedy, Philip Hogan, Sean T. O'Connor, Fionn Feehan, Joseph O'Connor, Cathal Hogan, Isaac Smith, Jack Kennedy, Brendan Heffernan, David Kearns, David Shiels, Ronan Murphy, Gary Drought, James Loughrey, Gary O'Brien.

Birr Camogie Notes

Over the Easter weekend we had two good practice games and it was an opportunity for the management to try out players in different positions. There were some regular players missing and it gave the younger girls a chance to stake a claim on the first fifteen for next Sunday and they all put in fine performances and are well capable of stepping up to senior grade this year which is very good for competition within the panel for places.
The championship starts next weekend and our first match is against St Sinchill's in Crinkle at 12 noon. All support would be greatly appreciated.
Training this week will be on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7.30p.m. in Crinkle.
Training for  the under 14 panel takes place on Friday at 4p.m. in the Brothers Field.
Well done to our county junior players Sheila Sullivan and Arlene Watkins who helped Offaly reach the Division 3 final on Sunday last in Lusmagh with a 2-8 to 2-5 victory over a strong Down team. The final will take place on 13th April.

Portumna's Day As Tommy Moore Cup Goes West

There were great celebrations in Portumna on Monday night when the successful Portumna senior hurling team returned home with the Tommy Moore Cup for the second time in three years.
Large crowds turned out to greet the players on their return home after their 3-19 to 3-9 victory over Birr in the final in Croke Park earlier in the day. It was a great game of hurling played by two fine teams but in the end Portumna proved to be the stronger as they powered away from their opponents in the second half to win by a 10 point margin.
Birr got a great start with two goals in the first 10 minutes but Portumna came back and forged ahead late in the half to lead by 1-11 to 2-4 at half time. A Portumna goal early in the second half put them well in the driving seat and although Birr kept trying, Portumna were in charge and they collected the title for the second time.
There were jubilant scenes as they were presented with the cup and they were repeated when they returned home triumphant to Portumna later that night.
The defeated Birr team also got a very warm welcome from a large crowd of supporters when they returned home on Monday night, which helped lift the spirits of the team who were very disappointed to have missed out on the chance of a record fifth title.
Speaking after the game Portumna manager Jimmy Heverin agreed conceding two early goals wasn't the best start but he said he wasn't too concerned. 'For once I wasn't because we have been so used to bad starts - the Galway county final and Loughmore Castleiney games we started slowly as well so I knew the boys would dig it out. I wasn't sure we were going to win the game but I knew we'd come back into an equilibrium situation. We were four points up at half time and when you have players like Joe Canning and Damien Hayes on your team and lads like Michae Ryan and Ollie Canning at the back, you always have a chance,' the manager said.
Joe Canning again played a starring role for Portumna, firing over 10 points.  'I don't think it's really sunk in yet,' he answered when asked how the victory compared to two years ago. 'These kind of occasions don't come around very often and I was lucky enough here two years ago to win it and lucky enough again today.'
He said he wasn't surprised by Birr's good start. 'They came at us straight from the start and we didn't expect anything else from four time All-Ireland champions going for a record fifth. We knew they'd come at us and I suppose they got a few lucky breaks there at the start. For us it was probably lucky they got the goals near the start and not at the end because we had the rest of the game to get back the lead.'
Birr Manager Pat Joe Whelahan said 'they were a better team on the day and I have no complaints. They are a good team. We have basically a young team who came into Croke Park for the first time today. I think it passed over some of them before they knew where they were but that's what you are up against. But we've no excuses. '
Birr captain Brian Whelahan said his side were 'very disappointed. A lot of young lads were blooded out there in Croke Park for the first time today so I hope - I know they can take little away from the game - but I hope they now realise the level they have to be at to compete out on that field. There are no hiding spaces out there. I am very proud of them. I know the effort we put in and I'm just disappointed for everyone,' the Birr captain said.

Warm Homecoming Lifts Spirits After Events At Croke Park

The Birr senior hurlers and management team received a warm reception at their homecoming despite going down to what turned out to be a strong Portumna team in the All-Ireland club final at Croke Park.
It was a warm reception on a cold night and the team were applauded by supporters who turned out in numbers as the team stepped from their coach to mount the platform in Emmet Square.
Things didn't go according to plan at Croke Park only hours earlier where Birr faced a strong and determined Portumna side who took their second All-Ireland title in three years. Birr started the brighter in the first ten minutes and found the net with two goals by Stephen Brown and Paul O'Meara. It was the sort of start Birr could only have dreamed of, but soon after it became evident that Portumna were a useful outfit and held their composure to come back into the match scoring points from out the field and from frees. They scored a first half goal despite the heroic efforts of Brian Mullins to keep it  out.  For the first real time in many a year Birr knew they had a match on their hands and began to lose their early grip on the match, as Portumna's hunger grew stronger. Portumna looked a fitter and stronger side and when they got into their stride Birr struggled to find any leeway in the match. Despite still being in it at the halfway stage, Birr were chasing the game in the second half before Simon Whelehan blasted a late free to the net.
Speaking at the homecoming for the team Chairman of Birr Town Council, Cllr Michael Loughnane paid tribute to the team on their efforts in Croke Park and thanked those who travelled to support Birr. He said while things didn't go their way they will be back again. He spoke of all the bunting and flags that was put up for the match and said the town looked well because of it.  He said there was much colour of the green and red on the Main Street.  He thanked those who travelled in their thousands to Croke Park.  He said the team could be back in twelve months time for some unfinished business and maybe then will be celebrating again.
Chairman of the County Board Pat Teehan said that while it was a big disappointment there was no shame in being beaten by a better team on the day like Portumna. He said that we have enjoyed what Birr have achieved at club level and in representing Offaly at Leinster and All-Ireland levels and have been immense.  Birr, he said are one of the great club teams of all time, who have set the standard and shouldn't let it slip.
Fr. Tony Cahir paid tribute to the Birr team, the backroom staff and Pat Joe for their efforts and in getting to an All-Ireland final. He said the spirit will live on and will hopefully be soon back in Croke Park.
Deputy Olwyn Enright said she was delighted to be present on the platform to welcome home the  Birr team.  She thanked those for coming out on the night and to all those who travelled from Birr and around the county to Croke Park to support the team. She wished them well and hoped they would be back here again.
Chairman of the Birr Club Brian Coolahan paid tribute to the team. He said it is a learning process and that there are some great young hurlers in Birr, who will be the standard bearers going into the future before adding they will be back in the near future.
There was much cheering when Brian Whelahan's name was announced. Brian said that to come back to Birr without the cup was hard, but the crowd that came out to meet the team and all those here gave the team a lift.  He spoke of the 'character of the players and in my eyes I'm very proud of them' he said.  He thanked Pat Joe, Billy Mullins, Brian Coolahan, the management team and the previous management team before.  He thanked those who supported the team, and acknowledged those who assisted the team in providing pitches for training in the lead up to getting to Croke Park.

Kevin Thompstone, chief executive Shannon Development and acclaimed businessman Barry O’Sullivan General Manager of Vistakon Ireland, based at the National Technology Park, Limerick, were key speakers at the event.
'The Shannon Development Knowledge Network business locations have been carefully developed to provide a product offering that is unique in the context of Ireland, with world class infrastructure, ready-to-go business incubation and office accommodation, and direct links to 3rd level education. The presence of these key elements along with the strong lifestyle influences of each individual location is the feature that differentiates the Shannon Development Knowledge Network from other business locations nationally and internationally,' said Mr. Kevin Thompstone chief executive, Shannon Development.
Speaking at the event Barry O’Sullivan of Vistakon shared his experience of how a company can operate globally from a Shannon Development Knowledge Network location. Vistakon Inc designs, manufactures and markets the ACUVUE® range of soft disposable contact lenses, the world’s number one brand.
Adivision of Johnson & Johnson, Vistakon Inc, employs over 600 people at Shannon Development’s National Technology Park in Limerick. Vistakon recently announced that it is to invest €100 million in a further expansion of its manufacturing operation. As a result of this Vistakon will create 60 new jobs this year in manufacturing, process development, engineering and quality areas.
In his address Mr. Thompstone spoke of how the advent of new technology and the world class support structure available at Birr Technology Centre and Shannon Development’s other Knowledge Network business locations, have made it easy for people to enjoy a better quality of life, while still operating in a global business environment.
'We made a conscious decision to promote our Knowledge Network of business locations and we are delighted with the response we have received. The Shannon Development Knowledge Network brings together three key elements - business, education and innovation to create dynamic and exciting world-class locations for living and working in the knowledge age. The Network have been designed to ensure that the Region can meet the needs of investors and enterprises in the Knowledge Age, and bring together world-class technology parks, business incubation facilities and third level institutions to create truly integrated business communities,' said Mr. Thompstone.

40th Annual Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival

At a recent meeting of the 40th Annual Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival the upcoming Programme of Events was discussed. In view of the significance of the 40th anniversary, the idea of reviving a number of previously held events met with broad approval and this is something which the Committee will be working hard on in forthcoming weeks.
Following on from the success of last years Exhibition Trail, Chairperson Michelle deForge announced the appointment of Eilis Lavelle as Arts Curator for this year’s Festival. The Arts programme which has expanded and developed considerably over the past few years due to both public demand and positive feedback from visitors and artists alike has become a highlight of the Week and it is hoped that this year will prove to be another outstanding success.
As the Festival is a purely voluntary event it depends on the generosity of local sponsorship along with fundraisers and grant aid. A number of fundraising events were discussed and these will take place throughout the year. Michelle was delighted to announce that following the Festival’s submission to Fáilte Ireland/Shannon Development, she had received the good news that funding from that source was confirmed, for which the Organising Committee are extremely grateful.
To mark the 40th Anniversary of the Festival a commemorative programme is planned and the Committee are appealing to anyone who has old photographs (preferably with the year and names noted), newspaper articles, programmes, stories or anecdotes from previous Festivals to contact Brendan Fogarty on (086) 3051699 or to post them to Brendan at 3, Roscrea Road, Birr. All items will be returned if contact details are included.
It is hoped that this important anniversary year will see the biggest and best celebrations to date, however, as the Festival is entirely reliant on volunteers to help run events at all levels over the coming months and throughout the week itself, the Committee would like to hear from anyone interested in becoming involved in any aspect of the Festival. For further information please contact Michelle on (086) 8551937 or come along to the next meeting which will take place on Thursday 3rd April at 8.00pm in Dooly’s Hotel.

Second All-Ireland Title In Three Years For Portumna

By John O'Callaghan

AIB All-Ireland Club SH Final: Portumna 3-19 Birr 3-9

Portumna collected their second All-Ireland Club Senior Hurling title in three years when they had ten points to spare over a gallant Birr side after a fine All-Ireland Final at Croke Park on Monday last.
The first half produced quality hurling from both sides in what was a very good contest at that stage but Portumna had begun to get on top in the latter stages of the half and a good start to the second half put daylight between the sides and they were able to maintain that advantage to the finish despite the efforts of Birr to get back into the game.
Portumna produced some beautiful hurling and their team work, speed and skill were a joy to watch. Birr found it too hard to contain them, particularly in the second half, as the Galway champions stretched their lead and ensured that the Tommy Moore Cup would return to Portumna for a second time.
Birr couldn't have asked for a better start to the game. They found the net twice in the first 10 minutes to open a seven point gap and even after Portumna hit back to level before the end of the first quarter, Birr responded again and went two points in front again. Portumna were settling more into the game and were finding it easier to pick off their scores than Birr and over the remainder of the half they outpointed Birr by 0-7 to 0-1 to go in leading by four points at the interval, 1-11 to 2-4.
It was clear at that stage that Birr needed to get a good start to the second half if they were going to get back into the game but the opposite happened. Portumna scored 1-2 inside the first four minutes to open a nine point lead and that essentially was that. Birr kept plugging away but everytime they got a score Portumna responded immediately and the closest they managed to get was a seven point margin.
The day ended on a sour note for Birr when team captain Brian Whelahan was given a straight red card in injury time following an off the ball incident.
Portumna were more than deserving winners and no one in the Birr camp had any quibble about the result afterwards. They didn't panic after getting a bad start but gradually worked their way into the game and began picking off their points with great skill and style.
The Portumna attack carried a better all round threat than Birr's on the day. Their speed and pacey running troubled the Birr defence and while the defence did reasonably well, the overall impact of the Portumna forwards proved too much for them. Andrew Smith scored 2-2, Damien Hayes hit 1-3 while Kevin Hayes also weighed in with three points and all those scores came from play. Add in ten more points from Joe Canning, eight of them from placed balls, and you have a good indication of the lethal threat posed by the Portumna attack. In all they scored 3-11 from play over the hour.
Birr were unable to match that kind of return. Simon Whelahan accounted for 1-7 of their 3-9 and 1-6 of his tally came from placed balls. No one scored more than once from play and too often the ball came out of the forward line too quickly as the Portumna backs began to get on top.
Early on the Portumna defence looked in trouble and Birr got in for two goals which were probably preventable. Simon Whelahan was causing problems for Eugene McEntee at full back but Portumna moved Ollie Canning into the full back position and that steadied the ship for the Galwaymen. Birr were getting very little room from the Portumna backs and despite making changes and substitutions, they were unable to work the openings that might have brought the scores to try and get them back into the game.
The hurling in the first half was excellent. Both sides played fast, first time ground hurling and the ball moved swiftly from end to end. There was passion and commitment from both sides and the game was played at great pace. As Portumna got on top in the second half Birr were left chasing the game and they started trying to engineer goals rather than take points as they knew that goals were the only way back into the game but it wasn't to be for them on this occasion.
Despite the pace and intensity of the first half there were only six frees in total in that half, two to Birr and four to Portumna. There were double that amount in the second half, eight to Birr and four to Portumna, but a total of 18 frees over 60 minutes says something about the quality of the hurling.
Portumna dominated in all the strong positions. As the game progressed their half back line began to take control and they also did well around the middle of the field. They had both pace and strength in their half forward line and they were able to control this crucial sector. As they gained the upperhand in this crucial sector of the field it left Birr scrapping for possession. They weren't winning as much ball as usual from puck outs and Portumna got a number of scores in the second half when Ivan Canning was able to pick out a man and he fired the ball over.
Birr had to fight hard to every score and on five occasions over the hour a Birr score was replied to less than a minute later at the other end by Portumna. That prevented Birr building up any momentum particularly in the second half and enabled Portumna to maintain their healthy advantage.
Ollie Canning had a fine game in defence for Portumna and was honoured with the Man of the Match award afterwards. His switch to full back helping tighten things up after Birr threatened to expose deficiencies in their backline. Elsewhere in defence Michael Ryan played very well at centre back and was in commanding form while Gareth Heagney also hurled impressively on the wing.
At midfield Leo Smith was a real livewire and contributed handsomely to this win while Eoin Lynch also had some good moments but hit a couple of bad wides.
In attack Andrew Smith caused a lot of problems as did Niall Hayes on the other wing but he wasn't rewarded with any scores. Kevin Hayes had an impressive game in the centre. Damien Hayes also used his pace to good effect while Joe Canning displayed his array of point taking, hitting some excellent frees including one from 50m from his own goals which sailed high over the bar.
On the Birr side Brian Mullins did well and made one terrific penalty save. Niall Claffey battled away at full back and did a good job containing Joe Canning from play while John Paul O'Meara got through an amount of good work in the corner. Michael Verney also had his moments and never stopped trying.
Birr struggled to make an impact at midfield. Barry Whelahan did well in the first half while in the forward line Simon Whelahan played his heart out. Brian Whelahan also put in a huge effort and it was sad to see him red carded so near the end.
Birr were first off the mark after just 23 seconds when Simon Whelahan pointed a 35m free after Paul O'Meara had been fouled. Then after just two minutes they found the net for the first time. Brian Mullins' puck out was knocked back to Brian Watkins and he lofted a high ball into the goalmouth. Ivan Canning seemed to hesitate coming out and Stephen Brown nipped in to get his hurley to the ball and flick it to the net.
A similar situation also ensued at the other end a minute later but Brian Mullins advanced to attack the ball and the danger was cleared. Portumna's first score was a free from midfield by Joe Canning after four minutes and after they hit two further wides they added a second point in the ninth minute when David Canning picked out Kevin Hayes with a good pass and he sent it over from 50m.
A minute later Birr got the boost of a second goal. Brian Whelahan had made a great run goalwards but his progress was halted and the ball cleared. But it only went as far as Barry Whelahan who sent it back into the goalmouth when Paul O'Meara connected overhead to send it to the net.
From the puck out Birr lost possession and Damien Hayes pointed for Portumna and they missed a goal opportunity when Joe Canning's handpass was flicked wide by Niall Hayes from close range. Midfielder Leo Smith then slotted over a nice point and their first goal arrived in the 14th minute. Joe Canning passed to Andrew Smith moving in on the left. He was hooked by Niall Claffey as he went to shoot but he managed to kick the loose ball and it ended up in the net.
Birr hit back instantly and Brian Whelahan gave a good pass to Rory Hanniffy and he picked off a point. Stephen Brown then found Brian Whelahan and he delivered a lovely ball into the right corner where Simon Whelahan beat Eugene McEntee before slotting the ball over the bar. From the puck out Andrew Smith won possession and added a point and Joe Canning levelled again when he pointed a free from his own 65m line after 18 minutes.
Two minutes later Portumna were given a chance of a second goal when Damien Hayes was deemed to have been fouled by Niall Claffey, although did appeared to have taken too many steps. Brian Mullins was joined by Brian Watkins and Brian Whelahan on the line to face Joe Canning and his well struck shot was brilliantly saved by Mullins and cleared by Brian Whelahan.
Joe Canning put Portumna back in front from a '65' but Simon Whelahan equalised from a free after 24 minutes to level matters for the third and last time. Portumna quickly regained the lead when Niall Hayes passed to Damien Hayes and he pointed. Kevin Hayes then stretched the lead after collecting a cross from Joe Canning and Canning himself then travelled back to 50m from his own goals to sent a free high over the bar. Andrew Smith added a further point and Portumna went in leading by four points at the break, 1-11 to 2-4.
Birr needed to start well after the break to ignite their challenge but after just 30 seconds Damien Hayes scored a great point from a difficult angle. At the opposite end Brian Whelahan's shot came back off a post and then when Stephen Brown lost possession in an attacking position, Portumna counterattacked and Leo Smith's high ball broke into the path of Andrew Smith and he ran on and steered the ball into the corner of the net. Joe Canning added a point from a free and Portumna were suddenly nine points up and on course for victory.
Paul Cleary and Barry Whelahan combined to set up a point for Brian Whelahan but Joe Canning caught the puck out and stuck the ball straight over the bar at the other end. Simon Whelahan pointed a Birr free but they weren't able to add to this and Kevin Hayes was on target at the other end from 65m after a three man move.
Simon Whelahan then pointed two frees in the 14th and 17th minutes, the first time Birr had strung two scores together in the half, to cut the lead to seven points. The Birr supporters tried to get behind the team sensing their might be a kick in them yet but their hopes were shortlived.
Joe Canning cut a sideline ball over the bar from the 45m line on the left and after 19 minutes Dylan Hayden failed to gather the ball, Andrew Smith gathered, passed to Damien Hayes who cut in from the endline on the right and crashed a great shot to the roof of the net. Joe Canning added another point and Portumna were 12 points up.
Birr didn't throw in the towel and nine minutes from time Simon Whelahan drilled a low shot from a 20m free to the left all the way to the Portumna net. They couldn't add to that to put more pressure on their opponents and Joe Canning added two more points from frees to stretch the Portumna lead.
With the game going into injury time Birr were awarded a 30m free. An incident happened off the ball and referee John Sexton brandished a red card to Birr's Brian Whelahan. Simon Whelahan pointed the free but that was the last score of the game and Portumna were champions for a second time.

Disappointing End To Day For Brian Whelahan

It wasn't the way it was meant to end. Playing in a record sixth All-Ireland Club Final and captaining the team, this was the chance for Brian Whelahan to add another great chapter to a glorious career but it ended not only in the disappointment of defeat but also with a red card.
He held his hands up and accepted responsibility afterwards and said he was very disappointed with that. 'Stupid, stupid at this stage of my life and I obviously meant to give him a dig but it wasn't to be where it was and that's the way it is,' he said.
Overall he said they had no quibble with the result and acknowledged that the best team won on the day.
'It's very disappointing. The best team won without a shadow of a doubt. I don't think anyone in Birr will have any qualms about it. We got a great start. We probably got what we didn't expect and knocked them for six. But we stood off out men a little bit and you can't do that with the game Portumna play. You have to be so tight and so close to them. Once they got possession they were able to inflict their running game on us. We just couldn't come to grips with it and we just stood off and it was so, so frustrating but I'm not going to stand here and take away from Portumna. They came up today with a job to do and they did it in style. They made it look very easy at times.
Brian said that Portumna were very impressive. 'It was made look very easy at times and you can't stand off a team that plays a running game. You can't afford to give them possession and we gave them possession and tried to take it off them. you can't do that.  But listen no blame games here, best team won by far, just disappointed that we didn't make a better game of it after the start we got.'
'We didn't build enough on the goals but what was worrying was straight away from the goals they were getting a point or two straight away,' he added and also said Birr were struggling to struggling to win pucks outs on either half back line in the second half.
'We're very disappointed. A lot of young lads were blooded out there in Croke Park for the first time today so I hope - I know they can take little away from the game - but I hope they now realise the level they have to be at to compete out on that field. There are no hiding spaces out there. I am very proud of them. I know the effort we put in and I'm just disappointed for everyone,' the Birr captain said..

No Excuses From Birr Manager

Birr manager Pat Joe Whelahan offered no excuses in the aftermath of his side's defeat to Portumna in Monday's final and said they were beaten by the better team on the day.
'We did everything right starting off. We got the two goals we needed and were going well but a few of our top players never performed today and I've no excuses we were beaten by a better team,' he said in the dressing room afterwards.
'We came to six points in the second half and were still fighting away. We could have got a goal but a mistake was made and they got a goal at the other end and that was it. They were a better team on the day and I have no complaints. They are a good team. We have basically a young team who came into Croke Park for the first time today. I think it passed over some of them before they knew where they were but that's what you are up against. But we've no excuses. I thought we played some nice hurling at times and we got two good goals and we could have got a few more goals because their backline was dodgy enough but they have some fine hurlers,' he said..
He agreed that Birr were playing well in the first half. 'We were motoring well but they are a strong team and they use their speed well. We take it on the chin. We lost to a better team and we accept that,' the Birr manager said.
'We got 2-2 and things looked good and every time the ball went in it looked dangerous and they were making the switches inside, not us. We needed another goal or two. Not blaming the referee but there were some funny decisions made. But there's no point blaming the referee, we were beaten by 10 points on the day by a better team. They got some fabulous points.
'We have beaten teams like them before but today we came up with a new team. I was worried this might happen but when we got the start I thought we were flying but we just weren't hurling and there's no excuses. I think we came a long way from last year. It is great to get into Croke Park with a club team, it's anyone's dream.'
He was asked if Portumna have upped the standard of club hurling? 'They have upped the standard at the moment because of what is in it but I'd say if we met them a couple of years ago with the team we had our experience then would have been a different factor but we had a lot of young lads there today. These are all young lads but it passed some of them by, We have a few main men and it didn't go for them,' he added.
He said he didn't know how the team would come back from this. 'I have told them to fo and get a new manager, like someone who has hurled for Birr for years, they should bring him in now with the young lads. I came back to bring them this far and I have my bit done. I got them here again. Now the club is up where it should be, it's up to them to keep it that way now but I don't see much point in me going through the same thing again. No field for 15 months and trying to get a field. It's hard enough to try and get a team but trying to get a field,' he laughed. '
'I know people are disappointed but I hope they'll get behind the team. It's the first time losing this heavy in an All-Ireland Final but that's basically it,' he said.

VEC Members Express Reservations About Moving Birr Youthreach

Offaly VEC members expressed reservations about moving Birr Youthreach, during the recent meeting of the Vocational Education Committee which was held in Birr Outdoor Education Centre.
There is presently a proposal to move the Youthreach facility from Birr Outdoor Education Centre on Wilmer Road up to the Travellers Training Centre in Syngefield Industrial Estate, Birr.
The members said moving the facility would mean having to provide a commuter bus as many of the Youthreach participants don't have cars and Syngefield Industrial Estate is a further distance to travel. They said most of the Youthreach participants also didn't want to move premises.
Diarmuid O'Neill CEO of the VEC said Youthreach will remain at Birr OEC and the Adult Education Services at the OEC will be moved to an alternative location.
Youthreach programmes provide 15 to 21 year old early school leavers with the opportunity to get recognised qualifications and training.
Students may choose from a range of subjects including English, Maths, Communications, Catering, I.T., Art, Horticulture, Woodwork, Childcare.  Accreditation is D.E.S. Junior and Leaving Certificate, andF.E.T.A.C. Foundation Level.
On the completion of Youthreach programmes, students may choose to progress to further education, full or part time accredited VTOS, BTEI or other programmes.
It is estimated that as many as 750 children fail to transfer every year from Primary to Post-Primary school. The number of students who leave education with no qualifications is 3.2% while another 15.3% leave with only a Junior Cert qualification.
Early school leavers are at particular risk in the labour market. Of those who enter the labour market after school, the unemployment rate is 47.5% for those with no qualifications, compared with 9.6% for those with a Leaving Certificate. Research also shows that both the levels of education and the grades achieved have a marked influence on gaining employment and, in general, that higher qualifications and grades: Increase the chances of gaining employment; reduce the length of time spent seeking work; reduce the risk of unemployment and promote higher earnings levels.

Excitement Builds As Birr And Portumna Prepare For Club Final

Excitement is building in Birr and Portumna ahead of next Monday's AIB All-Ireland Club Senior Hurling Final at Croke Park.
Supporters in both towns and eagerly looking forward to what should be a great game of hurling and the atmosphere is building nicely ahead of the game.
Only the parish of Lorrha divides the two clubs and this local derby should provide a hurling feast for patrons travelling to Croke Park on St Patrick's Day for the finals.
Over the last week the colours, flags and banners have begun to appear in greater numbers in both towns and hurling talk is predominant in most minds.
Fans are planning their day's outing and buses and other forms of transport have been organised to bring the thousands of fans from the midlands to Dublin for the big day.
Both clubs have a great pedigree in the All-Ireland Championship and that enhances the prospect of a memorable game. Birr have won four All-Ireland Club titles, a record only equalled by last year's champions Ballyhale Shamrocks from Kilkenny, while Portumna captured the Tommy Moore Cup for the first time in 2006.
Portumna have been favourites with the bookies for a long time and thus far have lived up to that favouritism and now stand just 60 minutes from glory once again. Since losing the 2006 Galway county final in controversial fashion, they have remained unbeaten and are clearly focused on recapturing the All-Ireland title.
Birr, who were being quoted as 3/1 outsiders by bookies earlier this week, recovered from a heavy defeat to Ballyhale Shamrocks in the 2006 Leinster Final to bounce back and stun the reigning champions in their own backyard in the Leinster semi-final before winning a record seventh Leinster title by beating Ballyboden St Enda's in the final.
Both sides have put a huge amount of preparation ahead of Sunday's final and nothing will be left to chance on either side ahead of the game. They both know how much is at stake and if they both perform to their ability on Monday it should be a memorable final. A second title in three years would put Portumna among the leading teams in the competition while a Birr victory would give them back sole position at the head of the role of honour with five titles.

Birr Council Pays Tribute To Seamus Fanneran

Birr Town Councillors paid tribute to Seamus Fanneran, who recently took off his councillor mantle due to ill health, at the monthly meeting of the Town Council.
Cllr John Carroll remarked that Cllr Fanneran stepped into the breach when Cllr Fred Ryan died. 'Seamus has always been a good friend and he was a good councillor who will be sorely missed. He was very close to the people and cared deeply about them. I hope that his health will improve.'
Cllr McLoughlin said the Fannerans lived in Mill Street, 'one of the oldest streets in Birr. Seamus has been through a very bad period of poor health. The legacy that he leaves behind him is that he had a fine social and political input into Birr.'
'He will be missed by all,' commented Cllr Denis Sheils.
Cllr Russell said Cllr Fanneran was also involved with the youth, the GAA and the social club.
'It is very unfortunate when these things happen,' said Cllr Michael Campbell. 'Seamus was always very courteous to my mother Sadie when she was on the Council. I hope and pray that he will get back to full health.'
Cllr Ann Hynes Spain said this was a sad occurrence and Cllr Fanneran had been a great asset. 'He always spoke from his heart and had a greater vision of Birr.'
'He was heavily involved in the GAA and youth projects,' remarked chairman Cllr Michael Loughnane, 'and he was always very courteous and friendly to me. I bumped into him on a couple of occasions last year in Tullamore Hospital when my father was sick'.

Birr Council 'Didn't Make Hay While The Sun Shined'

Birr Town Council should have built more housing while the national economy was doing well, Cllr John Carroll told the March meeting of Birr Town Council. 'We didn't make hay while the sun shined,' he commented.
The Town Clerk, Mary Gaughran said the councillors were talking about creating new housing at various sites around the town, but unfortunately there is a general downturn in housing construction. She said grave plots in the new cemetery will cost €300 and people can enquire about them by coming into the Civic Offices on Wilmer Road.
Cllr Carroll said the news that housing will be cut back 'will cause ripples in the town. I am also disappointed that Scurragh has taken as long as it has.'
Chairman Cllr Michael Loughnane commented that the poor weather over the winter didn't help with the Scurragh development.
Cllr Carroll added that the whole housing process is too lengthy and bureaucratic.
Cllr Denis Sheils said there are a number of gardens in the town which could be used for housing.
Cllr Sheils congratulated new Area Engineer Willie Ryan on a well drawn up plan of action for Council schemes and projects during 2008.
Cllr Tony McLoughlin said space will be made near the Technology Centre for bus parking which means it will be much safer for the pupils in the Girls School.
The councillor added he wished to place a water feature near the bus parking area beside the Girls School.
He was glad to see that a new parking area will be created in McAuley as people are presently parking on the grass which is creating an unsightly mess.
The councillor added that visitors often praise the town greatly when they are speaking to him.
Cllr Michael Campbell commented that it was great to see a Roads Programme 'in black and white because it means we can go back to Willie and say you promised this would be done!'
He added that a new lollipop person for schoolchildren was needed because the previous one had retired.
He suggested creating a pedestrian crossing near the Community School and it was a dangerous situation there with many students crossing the road.
Cllr Campbell said the high portion of the path opposite the old entrance to Birr Castle and leading down to Bulfin Park needed resurfacing. 'I nearly came a cropper myself when walking there, due to a hole.'
He talked of illegal rubbish dumping taking place at the back of Drumbane and the back of Presentation Place. The dumping at Drumbane is visible from the road and there is still debris remaining there from a bonfire.
Cllr Noel Russell said the Area Engineer has a hard act to follow because he has started so well!
Cllr John Carroll pointed out that the €179,000 for this roads programme was less than was needed. He said part of Rock Lane needs resurfacing.
He added that they should make more sections of the town's paths accessible to wheelchairs and prams. He agreed with Cllr McLoughlin that they should create a water feature at the girls' school.
Cllr Ann Hynes Spain said they had been talking about the need for a footpath to the soccer field for a few years, but still nothing has been done.
She said John's Mall at the Chains is dangerous because there are commingling roads and no Yield Sign.
Market Square, she continued, is confusing for traffic and signage is needed there.
Work also needs to be done on the chimneys in Bengal Lodge. 'A Birr Council representative went down to the Bengal Lodge houses six months ago and looked at the chimneys and no one has been seen since.'
Cllr Michael Loughnane, said there are a number of damaged bollards on New Road East. He continued that the road has subsided at Townsend Street, Glebe Street needs resurfacing and asked for an update on the Civic Amenity Site.
The Area Engineer said there are areas of the town's roads which need lining.
Cllr Campbell said he wasn't happy with the road sweeping machine cleaning up rubbish in Birr, and commented that there is a better system in Tullamore. He said the sweeping machine in Birr was not giving value for money. He believed that Birr Town Council should buy their own sweeper.
Cllr Loughnane pointed out that Birr doesn't have the same access to funds as Tullamore has, and Birr has lower parking charges.
Michael Roche, Director of Services, said the Civic Amenity Site should be operational by this April.
Cllr Campbell added that Birr has been neglected by the IDA as regards attracting in new companies and creating new jobs. 'There has been no replacement at all over the many years for the companies we lost, companies such as Leoni and Ko Rec Type. It's obvious that we have been neglected and are being passed over by the big guns.
'When Leoni closed down with the loss of many jobs I don't think the story even made the national headlines.' He said they should write to the regional IDA manager.
The Town Roads Programme 2008 for Birr is as follows: Resurface Rock Lane as far as Riverstown Road; provide drainage and parking bays beside playground; provide pedestrian crossing at Castle entrance; Birr streets - road lining; Moorpark Street - raise iron works; make footpaths accessible to wheelchair users - Oxmantown Mall and Burke's Hill; Connaught Street - pave paths and resurface carriageway; provide footpath from N52 to soccer field, with lighting; provide bus drop off bays beside girls school; general - provide street furniture - bins, benches etc; McAuley - provide offstreet parking.

SUB Project Doing Good Work With Birr Youth

Cllr Noel Russell gave an update on a new local youth project, during the March meeting of Birr Town Council.
The SUB Project stands for Saol ur Biorra and translates into New Life in Birr. It is a community based and supported GYDP.
It engages young people aged 12 to 17, from the Birr area, in a range of positive and constructive activities to facilitate their own personal development and promote civic responsibility.
Since its establishment in a premises on Connaught Street ten months ago the SUB project has engaged 22 youths in various programmes and activities. The young people involved in the SUB project take part in a wide range of activities including sports, fishing, arts and crafts, computers and community awareness projects, glass design workshops, and other special interest groups.
'We like to think,' commented Hazel Fleming, who heads the project, 'that the launch of the project was a star studded event, with Tanaiste, Brian Cowen, superstar Mundy and hurler Brian Whelahan in attendance. Great craic was had by all and we had the opportunity to showcase some of our work and meet some very interesting folk.
'We have had an incredible ten months and much has happened. The SUB and the CAMP committee organised a clean-up day of the local estate and got hordes of the community out to pitch in with the somewhat unglamorous work, for a great result.
'We travelled to Kerry for the annual GYDP Camping trip and we came fourth in the orienteering competition. We had such an eventful, fun packed weekend and the opportunity to canoe, boulder and socialise with other project groups from around the country.
'We recently had our first soccer match with the local Gardaí, which unfortunately we lost by two goals. However, we have learned as a group that hard work and persistence is needed - (we have the talent, no mistake) - and we aim to be victorious in our next encounter!'
Cllr Russell told the Council meeting that the SUB project recently completed its first Copping On Programme, which involved six youths in the local community.
The Copping On Programme examined communication skills, relationships, anger management, drug and alcohol education, the role of the Gardaí, the role of the Probation Officer, the consequences of breaking the law and anti-social behaviour, and life in prison.
They completed the programme with a trip to Limerick Prison where Prison Officer Damien Whyte showed them around and informed them about the reality of prison life for the prisoners.
'It has been an eye opening and enriching journey thus far,' said Ms Fleming, 'and the youth of the community has progressed immensely, in terms of Birr youth coming to think of the SUB as a "home away from home". The most important aspect of any youth project is the relationships that are developed, locally and beyond, which may open doors for our members in their future endeavours.
'With encouragement, self belief and help from project leaders, the SUB project assists youths in navigating the journey from adolescence to adulthood, and as a group we are resolutely looking to a bright future!'
The Saol úr Biorra project is part of a network of Garda Youth Diversion Projects to assist young people at risk. The project is operated by Foroige, the National Youth Development Organisation, and funded by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform through An Garda Siochana.

40th Annual Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival

The enthusiastic turnout at the recent AGM of Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival demonstrated continuing support for the town’s annual Festival, now heading into its 40th anniversary, making it one of the longest running in Ireland.
Chairperson Michelle de Forge opened the AGM by welcoming those present and complimented the outgoing Committee and all the volunteers who made last year's Festival a resounding success. She reviewed the fundraising activities of 2007, the festival highlights, the feedback from sponsors, participants and the public.
Treasurer Barry Murphy presented the Income & Expenditure for 2007 and outlined the growing costs of the festival which were met by generous local sponsorship as well as fundraisers and grant aid. This financial support was gratefully appreciated by the committee and they were thanked for their work on gathering the sponsorship.
The election of officers was then held. As a number of positions on the committee are still to be confirmed, full details of the incoming committee will be announced after the next meeting.
It is hoped that this 40th anniversary year will see the biggest and best celebrations to date. However, as the Festival is entirely reliant on volunteers to help run events at all levels over the coming months and throughout the week itself, the Committee would like to extend an open invitation to anyone interested in becoming involved in any aspect of the Festival, by joining the Committee or helping out in any capacity, to either contact Michelle on (086) 8551937 or come along to the next meeting which will be held in Dooly’s Hotel on Thursday 13th March at 8.00.

St. Brendan's CS Trip To Belgium

An opportunity was given to St. Brendans Community School, Birr, to send six students on a trip to Messines, Belgium to participate in an International School for Peace Studies project.  It was set up in order to build bridges between the North and South, and also between students from both Protestant and Catholic backgrounds.  One of the aims of the trip was to show how both Unionists and Nationalists had put their differences aside to fight beside each other in the Great War, and to try to demonstrate that we should be doing the same today.
As you can imagine coming up to the trip we were very excited but also nervous. The fear of not fitting in and not making new friends was on all our minds. However, the fear did not last for long.
The first day of the trip involved a lot of travelling to reach the peace school in Messines. The accommodation was much better than we had anticipated.
On the second day we began the 'Messines Experience.'  We visited many graveyards, memorials and trenches throughout the week. Some of the memorials will stay etched in our minds forever, such as the Thiepeval Memorial, the Menen Gate and Tyne Cot Cemetery. Also amongst the places we visited were Hill 62 museum, the execution cells in Poperange, Polkapelle cemetery and the Birr Cross Roads Cemetery near leper.
Polkapelle was a very moving experience as a young boy from Waterford of only 13 years of age was buried there who had fought in the Great War.  John Condon died in a gas attack just a week short of his 14th birthday.  It helped realise the utter devastation caused by the Great War. On request, our facilitators brought us to the Birr Cross Roads cemetery, which as you can imagine was very relevant to u
