29/6/2007 The Committee of Birr Swimming Pool regret that their plan to open the refurbished Birr Swimming Pool this weekend have had to be postponed due to a technical hitch. However, the opening date is just postponed for seven days and is seen as an unavoidable necessity to insure all completed works meet guidelines before the pool is commissioned. The official opening will now take place on Saturday 7th July and will be performed by Minister for Finance and Tainiste Mr. Brian Cowen. A tremendous amount of work has taken places over the past number of weeks with the main contractor Paddy McIntyre & Sons and sub-contractors meeting the deadlines set for this weekend's proposed opening. It was the intention to fill the newly tiled pool on Tuesday of this week but unfortunately this was not allowing the recommended period of time from when the last tile was fitted. When this came to light the committee decided to act with caution and postpone the filling of the pool and hence the delay in the official opening. They fully appreciate that there will be serious disappointment for their patrons and most especially for their customers who had made reservations and who will now be discommoded, which they regret very much but they believe the long term security/viability of the project and the investment therein is of paramount importance. Again they wish to put on record their appreciation of the tremendous generosity shown by the people of Birr to their fundraising appeal. Cheques are still coming in and they are moving closer by the day to having a debt free opening. You still have time to contribute. They can assure patrons that they, as a committee, are working tirelessly to achieve their original goal of opening a refurbished swimming pool and new leisure centre that the people of Birr will own and be proud of.
29/6/2007 Local businessmen Stephen Grant, Grant Engineering Ireland and Gerard Cleary, Glenisk, are among 40 Irish Entrepreneurs who will travel this month to the Dominican Republic and Haiti, the world’s poorest country, in an attempt to better their strategic corporate social responsibility skills and impart their expertise to assist local communities to develop sustainable enterprises. This unique expedition is the Caribbean CEO retreat, a highlight of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Programme which is built around the strategic value of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Participants in the week long event include this year’s 24 finalists, among whom Grant and Cleary are, and those from previous years, all of whom will engage in a series of CSR strategy sessions facilitated by one of the world’s leading CSR thinkers, Dr. Kellie McElhaney, Faculty Fellow of Corporate Responsibility at the University of California, Berkeley. These sessions will be coupled with a three-day stay in a compound in Haiti where the entrepreneurs will be split into six groups to help six communities identify and build sustainable enterprises. 'Since CSR exploded into mainstream business thinking it is represented in many forms across companies and organisations throughout the world. We have engaged Dr Kellie McElhaney to work with some of Ireland’s leading entrepreneurs, to evaluate why a new approach is needed to integrate CSR considerations more effectively into core business and strategy and thereby be a source of opportunity, innovation and competitive advantage,' said Enda Kelly, Ernst & Young Partner-in-charge, Entrepreneur of the Year Programme said. 'Approximately 66% of Haiti’s rural population lives below the poverty threshold and unemployment rate is around 60%. Despite the country’s clear socio-economic problems and barriers to improvement there exists a huge will among the ordinary Haitians to strengthen their country’s status. From primitive food production and steel manufacturing facilities our visionary entrepreneurs hope to utilise their skills and expertise to make a positive contribution and long term impact on these local enterprises. We hope they bring home an improved commitment to the purpose and meaning of CSR in practice,' he continued. Robert Gallagher, Chief Executive of Ulster Bank Corporate Markets said; 'Corporate Responsibility is integral for many companies in Ireland, where it is recognised that business skills can be used to benefit community projects and programmes. In addition to contributing to the communities in which we work and live, CSR also helps to involve and motivate employees, bringing them together to work in teams as well as generating community awareness. All the participants on this trip are creative thinkers and innovators who can bring solutions and forward thinking to address the challenges facing people in Haiti.' The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year programme is run in association with Ulster Bank, Enterprise Ireland, InterTradeIreland, Invest Northern Ireland and Digicel.
29/6/2007 Denver and Gwen Knowles are two elderly Americans who have a deep love for Birr and its region. If ever you are not feeling positive about this part of the world, a few minutes' chat with them will persuade you otherwise. Denver and Gwen are from Texas and have been happily married for 59 years. Denver is 90 years of age. They first came to Birr 11 years ago to trace their ancestors, really liked the area and have returned several times since. They are returning once again this week and this will be their seventh visit since 1996. They will arrive on Friday June 29th to stay until Monday morning, July 2nd, and will be staying in Dooly's Hotel. On this occasion they will be joined by 14 more descendants of the Usher families of Ireland for their first Usher Reunion, along with some spouses. Their group will total 28 and will be coming in from the USA, England, Canada, Dublin, County Cork and County Kerry. Local historian Margaret Hogan will be meeting them and taking them on a walking tour of Birr. Back in 1996 Gwen's interest in genealogy led her to learn that her maternal ancestors, the Ushers of Birr, lived here as far back as the 17th Century. The Usher family was originally of French descent and during the reign of Henry II changed its name from Neville to Usher. Joan Masters, another descendant of the Ushers of Birr, spent weeks in Birr and Dublin in 1960 researching the Usher families of Birr. Her extensive research was published in 1978 in The Irish Genealogist. So, with this journal in hand, Gwen and Denver came to Birr to view the home sites, grave sites and church records of Usher ancestors. The earliest Usher known to be in Birr, was Robert Usher, apothecary, who appears in 1677 on the Rent Rolls of the estates of the Parsons family in King's County. Robert Usher's house was among those burned by the English Army in September 1690. His son, John Usher is described in his obituary in the Dublin Journal of October 1760, aged 87, as a former eminent apothecary in Birr. On their first trip, before the tower of the old church in Birr fell, Denver uncovered and photographed the 1787 slab gravestone of Noble Luke Usher, engraved with the Usher Coat of Arms. The stone is now under the pile of rubble, along with many other gravestones, never to be seen again. He was an uncle of Gwen's great-great grandfather, Noble Luke Usher, who was an apothecary in Birr until his death in 1834. Gwen's great grandfather Marcus A Usher, born in Birr in 1822, lived with his parents and siblings above the apothecary shop at No. 14 Main Street. St Brendan's Catholic Church is part of the family history of the Ushers of Birr. Gwen viewed baptismal records of her great grandfather's nieces and nephews in 1862 through to 1867. The history of the Crotty Church Schism tells of Rodolphus Kennedy, husband of Sarah Usher (sister of Noble Luke Usher) being active in the fundraising for the new St Brendan's Catholic Church, being built in 1817 through to 1826. Gwen and Denver contributed to the renovation fund of the old Crotty Church but sadly this fine building remains empty and unused. The Church of Ireland is also part of the family history of the Ushers of Birr. Gwen viewed the 1799 marriage record of her great great great grandparents, John Usher and Mary White and the 1786 through 1801 baptismal records of their ten children, including Noble Luke Usher, father of Marcus A. Usher. Gwen's great grandfather, Marcus A Usher and his brother Joseph F. Usher went to New York City in 1845. They both studied medicine at New York University to become doctors. Marcus stayed in the States, a most respected doctor in Minden, Louisiana, where Gwen's grandmother was born in 1853. Joseph F went to Ballarat, Australia, where he was a respected doctor until his death in 1909. During their 2002 visit Gwen and Denver met Lord and Lady Rosse in Birr Castle and did some research in the Castle's Archives Room. With documented research in hand, Gwen presented her information that the Parsons family (i.e. the Earls of Rosse) had married into the Usher family. The large wall hanging in the Archives Room, depicting the Parsons family tree, listed the marriage of Sir William Usher and Elizabeth Parsons, daughter of Sir William Parsons (circa 1570-1650) and the marriage in 1636 of William Parsons of Birr and Dorothy Phillips (daughter of Alice Usher and Sir Thomas Phillips). On several occasions the Knowles ended their three weeks holidaying in Ireland with the last week in Birr, staying at Dooly's Hotel and enjoying evenings in Kelly's, The Stables, The Maltings, The Thatch, the County Arms or in Dooly's. Their interest in and love of Ireland also led Gwen and Denver to read all of Morgan Llywelyn's historic novels about Ireland.

29/6/2007 The 2007 pilgrimage from Birr to Medjugorje departed Wilmer Road in the early hours of Saturday May 26th. Included in the group of 21 were representatives from Tipperary, Clare & England as well as Offaly. Our spiritual director was Fr. Pat Greed. Kearns Bus brought us comfortably to Dublin Airport in plenty of time for our flight, which departed at 10.00 am after a short delay. A three hour flight brought us to Split on the Croatian Adriatic coast. The sun shone brightly as we spent a further four hours in a bus to reach our destination of Medjugorje after a total journey of about fourteen hours. A tiring journey but enjoyable nonetheless. The translation of Medjugorje is ‘between the hills’ and it is an accurate description of the landscape that comprises spectacular mountains in all directions. The land is generally poor with crops of vines and potatoes predominating. A few goats are seen now and again with cattle visible only rarely. Farmers can be seen cutting hay with scythes in fields too small for tractors. Medjugorje is a unique place and differs from other Marian shrines in that our Lady continues to appear there. Our Lady has been appearing to the six visionaries since June 1981. She has given regular messages to them since that time which encourage us to find true peace and joy by turning to her son, Jesus. Her presence in Medjugorje is palpable and it is truly a haven of peace and tranquillity. The local people are very conscious of the honour bestowed on their village and they are full of devotion to their faith and Our Lady. It was a pleasure to spend time with them. After the early night, our first activity was to attend Holy Mass (as it is termed in Medjugorje), in English, at 12.00 noon on Sunday. Mass here is a much more energetic experience than at home. Whereas in Birr the choir sings and some others hum along, in Medjugorje the choir leads and the congregation follows at full voice aided by lyrics projected on to an overhead screen. There may be something in this for us to consider. After an orientation meeting presented by the excellent Joe Walsh Tours guides, we were free for the rest of the day. We could then visit the various sites around the shrine which include the Church of Eucharistic Adoration, the Candle Park, the outdoor Mysteries of Light and the Stations of the Cross with the weeping Cross of the Resurrection. Excellent café bars provided sustenance after all the praying. Plans for Monday were curtailed by rain and thunder storms. After Holy Mass, we received an excellent talk on the Holy Spirit from Fr. Svet, Parish Priest of Medjugorje. In the afternoon, we visited the nearby Cenocolo Community where young men with drug and other addictions receive treatment based on spirituality. Two residents gave us interesting renditions of their stories. Whilst at Cenocolo, we took the opportunity to pray at the adjacent Oasis of Peace, a beautiful chapel with a very expressive crucifix. On returning to Medjugorje, we attended a provoking talk given by Joe Dalton, the Irish faith healer. On the following day, Tuesday, our group took a break from the praying to go on a day trip to Dubrovnik. We reached it via a very pleasant three hour bus journey in the spectacular scenery of the Adriatic coast. By prior arrangement, Fr. Pat said Mass in the Church of St. Blaise, patron saint of Dubrovnik, including a blessing of the throats. We then spent the afternoon touring the city walls and shops and restaurants of that beautiful city. The food didn’t reach the standard of Medjugorje. A pre-breakfast walk on Wednesday morning brought us to the Blue Cross. This is located at the base of Apparition Hill, where the apparitions originally took place. Some have also taken place at the Blue Cross itself. We had a short prayer service there that was enjoyed by all. Wednesday’s highlight was a private Mass for our group in the beautiful church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Studenci, a village about 30 minutes away from Medjugorje. A monument in the church grounds to the hundreds of parishioners killed in World War II and also in the recent Balkan conflict, locally known as the Homeland War, was a poignant reminder of the sufferings endured by the local people. Thursday’s organised function was an inspiring talk given by Fr. Jozo in Siroki Bryeg, about 45 minutes away. He was Parish Priest of Medjugorje when the apparitions first began. He was imprisoned by the Communists for defending the visionaries. He emphasised the power of the messages from Our Lady and how we should be living them in our everyday lives. Our final activity, postponed several times due to bad weather, was to climb Cross Mountain, which we managed on Friday. This is an important part of the pilgrimage but only for the physically fit. It isn’t as arduous as Croagh Patrick but it does need stamina. It takes nearly two hours and there are stops at the Stations of the Cross along the way. There is a large concrete cross on top of the mountain which was constructed by the parishioners of Medjugorje. The materials were all carried up by hand over a six week period in the 1930’s. This is a very important symbol of the people’s faith and Our Lady has also appeared there. It is a very spiritual place. Our journey home on Saturday was very pleasant with everyone tired but relaxed after the week in a haven of peace. The message of Medjugorje touched all. We could face in to the realities of life again with renewed peace and hope.
29/6/2007 The opening of Judy Pearson’s exhibition, which will be on exhibit at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre until September, will take place next weekend. The official opening by The Countess of Rosse will be held in the auditorium at 7p.m. on Thursday 5th July. The exhibition will continue throughout the weekend (Friday: 1p.m.-5.30p.m.; Saturday: 1p.m.-5.30p.m.; Sunday 1p.m.-5.30p.m.) before moving to the Suas an Staighre gallery space in the foyer. Judy Pearson has worked as an artist at Gurteen College, North Tipperary since moving to the area from England. Without a formal art education, being previously a nurse and midwifery sister, it was always necessary for her soul to follow her passion for art alongside her professional career. Judy wishes to capture and convey beauty of an ever-challenging range of subjects by use of an exploration and celebration of colour and light using media mostly of acrylics and oil paints, generally a figurative artist, aiming to make each painting an exciting discovery that will give pleasure to the voyeur. A tutor at Busherstown Creative Centre Judy has also led Art Therapy sessions for the Mental Health Unity in Nenagh. In 2007 the Busherstown group merged into the Ormond Artists Nenagh which, by invitation, Judy continues to mentor an curate their group exhibitions. 29/6/2007 Painter Simon Tarrant returns to his Irish roots as an exhibitor at this year's 'Flora Birrensis', the biennial art exhibition featuring plants and fauna found within the grounds of Birr Castle, County Offaly. Having exhibited around the globe from New York to London, for the second year running Tarrant is also showing at the Royal Academy of Art Summer Exhibition. His picture, 'Twilight, Birr Castle', hangs alongside work by the likes of David Hockney and Sir Norman Ackroyd. Although born in England, Simon Tarrant has always felt a special affinity with Ireland, since three of his grandparents are Irish. His powerful and uncompromising paintings capture the unique character of the Irish landscape. By applying oil as rapidly as possible to the canvas, he is able to show the country's intense and rapid changes of climate, as well as the diverse character of the Irish countryside. His sketches, on the other hand, adopt an altogether gentler tone: images of distant hills emerge from the paper to reveal their distinctively Irish nature; a wild horse makes an appearance on open bogland; a lone fisherman gazes across a loch. A diversity of influences can be found in Tarrant's paintings, from the spontaneous fluidity of Jack B. Yeats to the vivid colour and raw emotion of Howard Hodgkin. Royal Academician Humphrey Ocean has commented that the brooding passion evident within this young artist's work is 'evocative of playwright August Strindberg's paintings, for their sense of foreboding.' This quality is strikingly evident in Simon Tarrant's recent oil series of Birr Castle and its demesne, culminating in his still life Vibernum. Depicting a rare variety of the deciduous shrub found at Birr, Tarrant's painting celebrates not only the full glory of the plant's spring blossom - densely packed lace-cap white flowers offset against fiery red leaves - but also the magnificent gardens in which it flourishes. Tarrant's still life, 'Vibernum', will feature at the 'Flora Birrensis' Art Exhibition, which opens on 6th July 2007 at Birr Castle, County Offaly.

Michael, a member of our club for over fifty years, devoted many hours to the development of the Glenns. He was a committee member for over twenty years, captained the Club in 1979 and was President in 1992. Interestingly during his captaincy year Birr won two major titles, the Provincial Towns’ Cup and the prestigious All Ireland Mixed Foursomes in Galway. In recent years he was a trustee of the Club and was ever keen to represent the members throughout the region. He had a deep regard for the traditions of the Club, was noted for his generosity and was especially pleased to see the progress of the new course development. Despite his illness he worked tirelessly for the recent Classic and spent many hours organising teams and sponsorship. He will be sadly missed by all but especially by his family and innumerable close friends.

Cllr Sheils would also like to remind people that the judges will be out in force for the Birr Tidy Towns Competition shortly, and would call on all bodies to put their backs to the wheel and help to create a favourable impression of our town.
21/6/2007 On Saturday next, Encore Chamber Choir, based in Birr, will give a recital in Clonmacnoise as support to the Three Tenors concert. This promises to be a great evening of music, and especially so in this wonderful setting. It is part of the Shannonbridge Music Festival, which starts on Thursday and has many excellent musical events. Encore are based mainly in Birr, and its 12 members are from Birr and surrounding areas. They have performed at many local and church events over the past few years, and are in huge demand for weddings, banquets and corporate events. Their music is an eclectic combination of folk, sacred, gospel and contemporary, and the programme on Saturday reflects this. It includes sacred music such as The Hiding Place, Pie Jesu; folk and celtic music including She Moved Through The Fair, and music from other countries such as Yulishka Under The Lilac Tree (Hungary), Tzena (Israel), and contemporary spirituals like Down To The River To Pray and a very haunting arrangement of Amazing Grace. The Three Tenors are of course very well known, and this time their concert is entitled 'The Most Beautiful Songs in the World'. The concert commences at 8p.m., and tickets may be obtained on the gate, or from Killeens, Shannonbridge, or any committee member. So make your way to Clonmacnoise this Saturday for an evening of music not to be missed.

21/6/2007 It is said that climbing is an immense test of physical and mental endurance but all of this was blown out of the water recently as 75 teams from around the country attempted to scale not one mountain but all four of Ireland's highest peaks in three days. These were spread over four provinces with 1,200 kilometres of driving added to test competitors to the limit. One of the 75 teams on this challenge comprised of Andrew and Marion Lally, Mick Kehoe, Cronan Kennedy and Camillus O'Meara, who represented Birr RFC. Little was expected from this totally inexperienced crew as they set their eyes upon the first task, Kerry's Carrauntouhill. An awesome and fearful vision as they set off, it wasn't long before the scorching sun, relentless pace and rugged ascent took its toll, as tired and weary bodies sat down unable to go on. The Birr crew gritted it out and were back at base in 4 hours 10 minutes. No rest given they set off tired, burnt and weary for Mweelrea in Co. Mayo. Here, teams were given an average time of five hours to climb, and yet again in tropical heat and blistered feet, the Birr crew were down in 2 hours 40 minutes. 'The natural beauty and scenery overlooking Clew Bay made the extreme hardships endured on the way up all worth while,' said Kehoe. Once again engines were engaged and back on the road for a six hour drive to Slieve Donard in County Down. A 6a.m. start faced everyone as the fog came down and made climbing dangerous for the inexperienced. Not that it mattered to this crew as rumour has it, they were seen descending running downhill in boots carrying bagpacks! Sunstroke presumably. Two hours 35 minutes were recorded on an average time of four hours. Swollen joints, chronic fatigue now a given, would they have the mental toughness to overcome the physical barriers to complete four from four following the drive from Co. Down to Wicklow's Lugnaquilla? First Aid applied to the aching anatomy, water, banannas and jaffa cakes loaded into the rucksacks and off they set. What was noted by observers was Birr's ability to stick together and not allow one of their members to climb alone, and eventually on Sunday evening through thick and thin they descended their final climb exahausted and contented with an excellent time of two hours four minutes. From the 75 teams that competed this wily lot came in an amazing fourth, which earned a lot of respect amongst the elite core of competitors. A special thank you to talisman Marion who drove the climbers from province to province and to the organiser Lorraine who couldn't make it. Finally to sponsors Dooly's Hotel, Crinkle Merchants, Dolans Pharmacy, The Chestnut who contributed greatly to the fundraising campaign for Focus Ireland.
21/6/2007 Club members are busy training for the upcoming Border Trek on the weekend of 23rd/24th June. This is a 200 mile challenge over two days and is a test of stamina rather than speed. The event takes place in the Border counties of Fermanagh, Leitrim, Cavan, Donegal and Sligo. Fifteen members of the club will be participating, three for the first time. There is also an option to do a 50 mile Mini-Trek over one day. Eight club members took part in the gruelling Wicklow 200 event on Sunday 10th June. This is a 200km spin, taking in five difficult climbs. The only redeeming features of this event were the sunshine and scenery, but for those who like climbing it was a great day out. Tri-Athone On Saturday 14th July Club members will be in Athlone for the Triathlone event. Individual members will compete in all three events and six club members will enter as two teams. This should be a very competitive event for some, with some top class athletes participating and for others just a matter of completing the event in a personal best time. The event takes place in the heart of Athlone – the swim takes place in the Shannon at the bridge and the running event takes place around the streets. It should be a great spectacle with the river and castle as backdrops. Annual Billy Butler Club Cycle There are just nine weeks left until Sunday 19th August. This is the date for the Club’s Annual Billy Butler Cycle. There will be three distances – 50km, 100km and 120km and by starting now and doing regular mileage a few times per week you could take part at a level to suit your fitness. Last year’s event was very enjoyable and the club is already planning to improve on this success. The club intend to run a few supervised training spins during the month of July for beginners. If you are new to cycling and would like to train for this event, training schedules are available from Bernie at (085) 1500519.

14/06/2007 Councillors failed to come to a decision about the proposed Birr Bypass during the June meeting of the local Town Council. After a lengthy discussion on the matter it was decided to put off resolving the issue until a future meeting, perhaps in July or September. The problem was the councillors had a choice of two bypass routes before them and they couldn't come down definitively for either one or the other. The Council Executive was advising them to opt for the Eastern Route. A couple of the councillors thought, however, that the Western Route would be the preferred option. Birr now has a severe traffic problem and badly needs a bypass. However the construction date for the bypass will be in 12 to 15 years time and by that stage the town's traffic problem will have worsened. The traffic is heaviest on Fridays. The proposed Eastern Route is 10.6km in length, has seven roundabouts and a bridge. County Planner Vincent Hussey said there were a number of reasons he was advising that they opt for the Eastern Route and these were that it crosses the Camcor without needing embankments; most of the town is east of the Little Brosna; there are four bridges on the Camcor; it uses good agricultural land; avoids existing areas of development and areas of architectural / historical significance; it realigns the N62 south of Birr; provides better service to traffic bypassing Birr; serves traffic moving in and around the town better. The Western Route is 11.8km and has seven roundabouts and two bridges. Mr Hussey said it will be constrained in the north at Dovegrove and Tullanisk and by the floodplain of the Little Brosna. He said the road would require the construction of an embankment across the floodplain. He added that the Little Brosna floodplain is an environmentally sensitive area and he wondered about the wisdom of constructing anything there. Cllr John Carroll preferred the Western Route. He commented that it would provide a better service to the often heavy traffic coming from the west. Cllr Carroll warned the councillors about the danger of making a hasty decision. 'Birr Town Council has made decisions in the past which have subsequently been rescinded.' Over 20 years ago, he recalled, the Council had been discussing knocking down the monument in Emmet Square and putting a roundabout in its stead. Thankfully no decision was made on that awful proposal! Cllr Carroll said the Bypass had been under discussion over the last three years and the matter was dragging somewhat. Cllr Seamus Fanneran agreed with Cllr Carroll and said he too would prefer the Western Route. A Birr Land Use and Transportation Study (LUTS) Draft Report was issued during the meeting. This study deals with the management of traffic in Birr and environs for the next 20 years. This study pointed out that an initial round of public consultation took place on 29th of November 2004 when 50 people attended a meeting held in the County Arms Hotel. Those present participated in a survey of attitudes towards a proposed bypass of the town and also completed a questionnaire on the matter. The three most popular priorities were: provision of a bypass; traffic management; construction of internal distributor routes, eg. Tullamore Road / Banagher Road. The draft was published on November 2005. A second period of consultation then ensued during which 48 written submissions were received. There was a second public meeting on the 30th of January last and 20 submissions were received following this. The main issues raised in these submissions were The Eastern versus the Western bypass; the adverse effects on existing houses on Clonoghill Lane; the adverse effects on Meadowville. The LUTS report said it was recommending that an Eastern Bypass be constructed for the following reasons: It has a superior alignment which will provide better service both to traffic bypassing Birr and also to that moving in and around the town. It has less impact on the environment. It will provide more support to the future development of Birr. Other proposals recommended by LUTS include: Construct a roundabout at the Military Road - N62 Roscrea Road junction; construct roundabouts in conjunction with the Tesco development; provide car parking in the Rectory field; extend paid parking on the town centre streets; traffic calming is needed along many of the streets and approach roads in Birr; encourage the provision of a bus service to Tullamore Railway Station; provide pedestrian links where possible; provide tactile paving approaching crossings for visually impaired people; seek to provide bicycle parking facilities; seek to have Mercy Girls Primary School moved from Chapel Lane; pedestrianise some of the town centre streets; develop a series of cycle lanes around the town; signpost Town Trail and landmark buildings. While Cllrs Carroll and Fanneran were in favour of the Western Route, a couple of the other councillors didn't know which route to choose and the remainder of the council seemed in favour of the Eastern Route. Michael Roche, Director of Services, said he could see few advantages with the Western Route and was also supporting the Eastern Route. A vote on the matter was taken and a majority of the Councillors voted to postpone making a decision on which bypass route to choose until a future meeting.
14/06/2007 Cllr Michael Loughnane (Fianna Fáil) was elected the new Chairman of Birr Town Council during its June meeting in the Wilmer Road Civic Offices on Monday evening last. Outgoing Chairman was Cllr Michael Campbell (Fine Gael) and he gave 'a very sincere thank you to all the Council staff, indoor and outdoor, for their courtesy and help.' He said he tried to do the best of his ability during what was a busy year for the Council. 'I was very green when I took up the Chair and the job is like being Captain of a team. 'I really enjoyed my year as Chairman. It was a great honour and privilege to be in this position.' Cllr Noel Russell then proposed Cllr Michael Loughnane (Junior) for the Chair and this was seconded by Cllr Seamus Fanneran. Cllr Russell said Cllr Loughnane has been in the Council since 1999, runs a vibrant business in the town and his family is 'steeped in local politics.' Also present at the meeting was Michael Loughnane (Senior) who is suffering from a serious illness. Indeed, Cllr Seán Doorley (Progressive Democrats) had been earmarked for the Chair but he stepped aside this year for Cllr Loughnane due to the illness of Cllr Loughnane's father. 'It is a great pleasure for me to be here this evening,' commented Michael Loughnane (Senior) addressing the meeting. He said his father (who was also called Michael) had been Chairman of Birr Town Council and the late Seamus Loughnane (uncle of Cllr Loughnane) was also Chairman. 'Therefore this is the third generation to be sitting in the Chair. 'I have been on the Council of Fianna Fáil for 11 years. People are often critical of Town Councils but Town Councils do tremendous voluntary work.' His voluntary role in the FF council saw him up in Dublin for meetings three or four times a month. He said he had a serious illness and that was why he was now addressing the councillors. He said his son, Cllr Loughnane, has been working with him in their Tullamore Road filling station for ten years 'and I don't think we have had one row in all that time.' Cllr Loughnane commented that his grandfather was Chairman of the Council in 1964 and he died in that same year. His uncle Seamus was Chairman of Offaly County Council in 1995 and was first elected onto Birr Town Council in 1979. 'If it hadn't been for the sudden death of Seamus then I probably wouldn't be here this evening.' He added that his father is a 'fighter, grafter and positive thinker' and was taking his illness extremely well. He commended Cllr Campbell for a job that was very well done and it would be hard for him to reach that standard in the year to come. He said they were now going to discuss LUTS 'which is something of a baptism of fire for me.' The new Chairman commented that broadband was now being installed in Birr and this was an important development. He talked about the proposed Youth Café, the proposed mental health facility for the town, the new civic amenity site which will now go in Clonoghill Lower rather than on the Tullamore Road. He added that Birr has a large housing list of 170 applicants. 'Sometimes people can be a bit cynical about politicians, for example saying that TDs are doing nothing for Birr because no major industry has come into the town. But as we all know attracting a major industry is extremely difficult.' Cllr John Carroll congratulated the councillor on his appointment to the Chair. He said he served on the Council with the late Seamus Loughnane. 'We have all been moved this evening by the resilience shown by your Dad, and we would hope that under the same circumstances we would display the same courage.' Cllr Seamus Fanneran said he also served on the Council with Seamus Loughnane and also worked on the GAA committee with him. 'He was very committed to his work in these organisations.' Cllr Loughnane also wished Cllr Fanneran a speedy recovery from his recent illness. Cllr Tony McLoughlin said that the late Cllr Michael Loughnane had been a building contractor who had employed 300 people at one stage. Cllr Ann Spain praised the outgoing chairman for his year in office. She said Cllr Campbell always kept each Councillors informed and updated with the latest development of ongoing issues by a phone call or a text message. His approachability and eagerness to be of assistance was very evident and also very much appreciated, she said She also wished Cllr. Loughnane every success as the new Caothaoirleach for the coming year ahead. It was then proposed and seconded that Cllr Denis Sheils be the new Leas Cathaoirleach. The outgoing Vice Chairman was Cllr Noel Russell. In other business, Cllr Sheils pointed out that 'since we lost FAS a few years ago the town hasn't benefited. We need to replace it with a youth employment scheme.' He talked about the heavy amount of litter in the town after a weekend and the speeding of cars on High Street. Cllr Ann Spain asked for an update on Crotty's Church and suggested they utilise its space during Vintage Week for an art exhibition. Director of Services Michael Roche said Crotty's Church has been on the property market for four months but there hasn't been one single inquiry about it. The matter would have to be rethought, he commented. Cllr Seán Doorley said buses parking in Emmet Square are a problem. Cllr Noel Russell said cars are now taking a shortcut down the wrong way on Coach Road. He added that the yellow lines outside the Model School have not worked. Cllr McLoughlin said a path has to be constructed out to Lidl as it is dangerous. Mr Roche said if Lidl don't do something soon then the council will take action against them. He added that the new recycling centre will be close to Syngefield Industrial Estate. Cllr Spain said the recyling facility that has been secured is a practical, environmentally sound solution that meets the community’s specific needs. It’s not before it’s time and is another plus for Birr, she said. She also asked if there was any up do date report on the proposal put forward by teenagers at the previous meeting to create a skatepark in Birr. She said she believed this idea coming from the teenagers should have full support from Birr town. Cllr Campbell commented that there is a problem with HGVs on Rosse Row.
14/06/2007 Birr postman John Wrafter has retired after delivering mail for 50 years in the area. John was 64 years of age last March and when he started working for Birr Post Office he was 14 years old. John was born and reared in Newbridge Street, Birr and he recalls his Monday to Friday daily routine which remained the same for many years. 'I'd get up at 5.15a.m. and at 6a.m. we'd be at the P.O. and would start sorting the incoming mail. 24 postmen come to the Post Office each morning to do this sorting. 'At 7.30a.m. we started heading out to make the deliveries of the mail and I finished each day at 1.30p.m. which is a six hour delivery period. I'd go back to the Post Office and sign off. The afternoon would then be free and I might do some gardening.' He first started working in the Post Office on the 11th of June, 1957 and retired from his post 50 years to the day from when he first started. John spent the first five years of his working life delivering telegrams. From the age of 19 to 21 he spent two years working in the postal service in Galway and Salthill. Shortly after that the first motorised post came into being. Until then the postmen had delivered the mail on bicycles. John was educated in Birr National School and in Birr College under Brother Denis. He also spent some time in Birr Vocational School under the principal Bertie McCoy. One day he was chatting to a fellow who was leaving the post office and John decided to apply for the vacant position. The wage was only a few shillings and they worked six days a week Monday to Saturday. The working week changed to five days about a quarter century ago. His father was John as well and he worked in Midland Mineral Water Company which was owned by Michael Dunne. His father used to make minerals such as cola and lemon soda. Midland Mineral Water Company closed down about 30 years ago. His mother was Rose Feighery, who was originally from Kinnitty. He has two sisters and a brother. His sisters Patricia and Veronica live in Seffin, Birr, and in England respectively, and Danny lives in Peterborough, England. John's wife is Maura Lenehan from North Cork and she was originally a telephonist. They have one son, Mark, who is married and lives in Barcelona Spain where he works as a web designer. Mark used to work as a journalist in The Midland Tribune and wrote a very witty and popular column called Uncle Pat's Corner which was popular with adults as well as children. Last weekend the Post Office held a dinner function for John in Dooly's Hotel. John is a very sporting person and his hobbies have included hurling, football, table tennis, tennis, racquetball, badminton, cycling and running. He completed three Dublin City Marathons in 1980, 1981 and 1982 and the fastest time he clocked was an extremely impressive 3 hours and 15 minutes. He still goes to the gym in the County Arms to keep fit. John won a senior hurling county championship medal with Birr in 1971 and his position was centre half back. They played St Rynagh's in the final and won by a point, with Birr scoring a goal in the last minute. He also played badminton with the Offaly Senior team and used to practise this sport in Oxmantown Hall, Birr. When this facility closed they practised badminton in the Community School. John still coaches badminton in Carrig. When he retires he sees himself gardening and doing some work around the house. 'We will also be travelling for a few months until next October and will be visiting Mark in Spain.' 'I enjoyed my work as a postman and met many very friendly people with whom I used to stop for a cup of tea and a chat. I also enjoyed the banter and craic with the other postmen when we were sorting the mail first thing in the morning.'
14/06/2007 Dooly’s Hotel was the place to be last Saturday night where the 39th Annual Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival hosted a most successful Midsummer's Ball. The Committee were delighted to see so many people enjoying the night which began with a Champagne Reception. All enjoyed a wonderful meal and danced the night away to the fantastic Marble City Sounds followed by DJ deBrun into the small hours. The raffle was very generously supported and the prizes were kindly sponsored by Go Ireland.com, The Riverbank Restaurant, Richmond Marketing, Birr Theatre & Arts Centre, David O’Meara-Pharmacy Plus whilst wine was sponsored by Sean Glennon & Sons Ltd. 14/06/2007 Duke Special will be the headline act for the 39th Annual Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre on Friday 10th August. Duke Special is an artist aptly named. Dynamic, musically ambitious and bracingly eccentric, he’s right on cue to charm Ireland with his inimitable style and lush musicality. Hailing from Belfast with a sound that is self-confessed 'hobo-chic', Duke Special - AKA the endlessly inventive Peter Wilson - is once heard, never forgotten. Blissfully at home in his own alluring genre of beautifully bruised romanticism, Duke Special is a world unlike any other - a world filled with vaudeville-esque sensibility, sing-a-longs and addictive melodies. 'My sound is a bit vagabondy, but pure and soulful too,' he explains. 'Before this I was desperately trying to find my voice and the kind of music that really sat well with who I was. I'd been in a couple of rock bands, but I always imagined people of all ages at our concerts, so started working on demos with a friend, producer Paul Wilkinson, and Duke Special was born.' A tour de force on vinyl, he’s equally vibrant on stage. Often joined by a small collective of eccentric musicians - Temperance Society Chip Bailey (drums /percussion), Councillor Réa Curran (trumpet/ harmonium) and Morris-Dancing Ben Hales (guitar/backing vocals) - the performance easily matches the music for sheer grandeur and individuality. In your average show you can expect Peter’s balmy vocals and dreadlocked persona to be accompanied by the theatrics of an old gramophone, a velvet-encased piano, Stump fiddles and collection of makeshift instruments, all of which bring the soul of Duke Special to life. A fervent performer who harks back to the pre-rock ’n roll era with dashes of Gershwin and orchestral swing, he stands on stage with a white-knuckle grasp on originality. Gloriously vintage and unlike any other artist, Duke Special is exactly that. He’s also shared a stage with a host of artists including Rufus Wainwright and Van Morrison a big influence on Duke. 'What I’m trying to put across is something that’s more than just a singer-songwriter playing his songs. I want it to be a show that moves people, but also entertains them too.' With the melodies of ‘Freewheel’ and ’Everybody Wants A Little Something’ at the tip of everybody’s tongue, these are the hottest tickets this summer! Get your tickets now for Duke Special at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre on Friday 10th August. Box Office open Monday- Friday 1p.m.-5.30p.m. Tickets MUST be paid for at time of booking – credit card/lazer accepted. Tel: (057) 9122911.
14/06/2007 The Annual Set Dancing Festival organised by Birr Comhaltas continues to go from strength to strength and this year's one held over the bank holiday weekend was the best to date. Set dancers from all over Ireland and some from Britain enjoyed four ceilithe and two workshops. The increased interest locally, brought about as a result of the very successful set classes organised by Donal Morrissey over the Winter months, was reflected in the numbers attending the various events particularly the workshops. These were conducted by the popular husband and wife team from Co. Louth Padraig and Roisin McEneany, who in addition to teaching new sets to the more experienced took a particular interest in the beginners helping them through the intricate movements of the lesser known dances. Sinead Bray from Co. Meath conducted a very interesting solo dance workshop which focused on the old traditional steps which are gaining in popularity by the day. The high point of the weekend was the Saturday night ceili which featured the ever popular Glenside Ceili Band from Longford, who demonstrated why they are regarded by many as the best in the country. They certainly kept the capacity crowd on their feet all night and won rapturous rounds of applause from the appreciative dancers. The event got off to a flying start on Friday night with an excellent performance by the Swallows Tail Ceili band from Mayo. Music for the Sunday afternoon ceili was provided by the popular Clare/Cork duo of Micheal Sexton and Pat Walsh, while on Sunday night two young local new people who have just launched their ceili group on the scene, James Hogan from Killeigh and Colm McGill from Mountrath, provided excellent music for a four hour ceili, and while the dancers were a little tired after an exhausting weekend they couldn't resist the liveliness and the variety of the music to dance themselves almost to a standstill. The success of the event was a tribute to the enthusiasm of the principal organiser Donal Morrissey who has donated most of the past year with his brother Ronan to promoting it throughout Ireland and Britain. They were assisted by other members of the branch who looked after the stewarding and the catering. The musicians too got in on the act and organised a special session in the Chestnut which was very well attended. The Marian Hall, in which all the events were staged, was looking resplendent after its recent facelift for the marathon election count and the facilities provided were a tribute to the hardworking Hall Committee, who did their share to make the visitors welcome. All in all it was a memorable weekend and all who participated are eagerly looking forward to next year. In the meantime locals can look forward to next Autumn and the resumption of the classes which hopefully will attract an even bigger attendance.
14/06/2007 Over the summer Birr Theatre and Arts Centre is hosting three weekends of dance workshops for teenagers called Vividance. The weekends are June 22nd to 24th, July 20th- 22nd and August 24th to 26th. The workshops will be delivered by professional dance company Myriad Dance who are based in Wexford and well known for their work with young people. The first weekend will also incorporate on Saturday a visit by students from the Dance Faculty at the University of Shenandoah in the US, who will do one workshop with the group and then an open performance called Dance Across the Ocean. The workshops promise to be dynamic and exciting and above all fun. There is no previous dance experience necessary as the workshops focus on improvisation and the creation of new dance movements and are open to both boys and girls. Dance has become a language and means of self expression for young men and women and these weekends are ideal for those who want to learn new skills. The cost is only €20 per weekend and the workshops are two to three hours long and take place from Friday afternoons through to the weekend with older and younger teens forming separate groups (12 to 14 years and 15 to 18 years). Young people can do one, two or three weekends, but everyone is encouraged to sign up for the first weekend to ensure places on the following three as numbers will be limited. This is an exciting opportunity for young people to experience guidance from a professional dance company like Myriad and to see professional dancers perform. The performance are all open to the public as well. For information on Myriad Dance see www.myriaddance.com. To book a place contact Birr Theatre & Arts Centre on (057) 9122911 or email birrtheatre@eircom.net. The Vividance project is supported by Offaly County Council, The Arts Council, The Sports Council and HSE.

Inter Club Matches A very active week on the Inter Club front with four teams representing the Club. First out were the Heineken Mixed who unfortunately found Cahir Park on top of their game. Later in the week our O’Moore, McDowell and Provincial Towns teams all came through with stunning victories. The O’Moore team under the direction of Brian Guinan easily accounted for Rathdowney. Dick Quinn, Pat Gleeson and Colman Loughnane were the home players while Seamas Coakley, Eamon Moore, Declan Hennessy and Pat Scully were in terrific form on the away fields. On Friday the McDowell foursomes faced the generally invincible Moate, winning all three matches away and three and a half at home. Well done to John Gilmartin/Michael McGarry, Brian Guinan/Seamas Coakley, Michael Ashe/Colman Loughnane and Martin Hynes/Eddie Nevin who were at home. 30/5/2007 Birr, Roscrea, Banagher and Nenagh will benefit from this week’s announcement by Shannon Broadband Ltd of the appointment of a contractor to lay 52kms of broadband fibre network in eight towns around the Shannon Region. Clarke Quarries Ltd, part of the Clarke Group based in Co. Cavan, has been awarded the contract by Shannon Broadband Ltd to undertake the laying of fibre optic cable in eight towns which are: Abbeyfeale (approx. 4.1km of cable to be laid) and Newcastle West (approx. 6.2km of cable to be laid) in Co. Limerick; Kilrush (approx. 5.2km cable to be laid) in County Clare, Nenagh (approx.10.8km of cable to be laid), Roscrea (approx. 8.1km of cable to be laid) and Templemore (approx.5.7km of cable to be laid) in Co. Tipperary; Banagher (approx. 4.2km of cable to be laid) and Birr (approx. 7.7km of cable to be laid) in Co. Offaly. The network being installed around the towns is called a ‘Metropolitan Area Network’, or ‘MAN’ for short. Shannon Broadband Ltd is a public sector consortium led by Shannon Development, in partnership with Offaly County Council, North Tipperary County Council, Limerick City Council, Limerick County Council, and Clare County Council. Established in 2003 Shannon Broadband Ltd is the first public sector regional telecoms company to be set up in Ireland. It was set up to establish good broadband ‘connectivity’ around the Shannon Region. Announcing the appointment Kevin Thompstone, Chief Executive, Shannon Development and Chairman of Shannon Broadband Ltd said, 'We are delighted to be undertaking phase two of the MAN project. The aim of Shannon Broadband is to develop world-class broadband infrastructure and services network throughout the Shannon Region. We have already completed the laying of over 57kms of fibre optic cable in Limerick City as part of our first development phase. The presence of cable will make it highly attractive and feasible for licensed operators to offer the latest broadband services to businesses, commercial interests, public services, local communities and domestic users. Ensuring fast, cost effective broadband services is key to attracting inward investment and creating more jobs in the future,' he said. Work will start on laying the cable in each of the eight towns in early June and is expected to be completed before the end of the year. 'One of the main requirements of business today is the availability of "always on" broadband infrastructure and service. This new network will send a message to any investor that Banagher and Birr are at the cutting edge in terms of internet access and willingness to embrace the information economy', said Michael Roche, from Offaly County Council. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the public during the laying of fibre optic cables. For instance advance work in laying ducting has already been undertaken on some roads by the Local Authorities during work on other construction projects, which should keep disruption to the public to a minimum in those streets. A dedicated phone line has been set up to answer any queries from the public Tel: (061) 402233. Further information on the project can be obtained from www.shannonbroadband.com Once work in all towns has been complete, the broadband networks infrastructure will be managed by a special Government appointed Management Services Entity (MSE). The MSE will be responsible for making the facilities of the MANs available to authorised telecoms operators on a wholesale basis, so that they can offer broadband services to the different segments of the local market.
30/5/2007 A number of Birr teenagers recently addressed the monthly meeting of Birr Town Council to make an appeal for the provision of a skate park in Birr. They thanked the Council for allowing them to talk to them about the skate park. 'We agree that it really shows your interest and willingness to listen to the teenagers of Birr. What we hope to do at this point is to convince you of the need for a teenage facility, such as the skate park.' 'Our decision to approach Birr Town Council was prompted by the wonderful work the council did in providing the state of the art playground for the children of the area. However, people in the 12-18 age group are not allowed to use the playground and so are left with little option other than hanging around on the streets, which is not good for us or for the appearance of the town,' they said. 'It is well known that activity is vital in the physical and mental health of teenagers. We think that a skate park would certainly benefit the health of the future of teenagers in the area. 'We have been told by the Garda Siochana that skateboarding on the streets is dangerous to the traffic, pedestrians and skateboarders alike. When we told them we were gathering a petition, they were extremely positive in their support of what we were doing, but were not allowed by their status, to sign it. 'In the course of organising this petition, we have gathered signatures of 500 local people who support the provision of a skate park for the town,' the teenagers added. 'The nearest available skate park to us is the one provided by the council in Tullamore, but this is just too far away to be of any practical use to teenagers of Birr. We believe that the provision of a skate park in Birr would not only provide a valuable service for the teenagers of the town, but would attract teenagers from other towns and villages also, and possibly introduce revenue to the area through the spending of parents who bring their teenagers to use the park. 'Teenagers are regularly discouraged by the gardai and other people in authority from hanging around the streets and the two parks of the town. The provision of a skate park, in an open and easily accessible place, would go a long way to eliminating this problem. 'On our own behalf and on behalf of the teenage population of Birr, we thank you for giving us your time and for making such an important democratic body available to us, the future voters of the area. We hope you will see the merit of our presentation and actively support the wishes of the 500 people who signed our petition,' the teenagers concluded.
