Banagher/Beannchar

The pace of life in this charming, quite town on the River Shannon seems dictated by the slow flow of the river. Banagher consists of a long street of tidy late-Georgian houses running right up to the river, where a sweeping bridge links Offaly with Galway. The bridge is fortified on the west side by a Martello tower, a small circular fort built against possible invasion by the French in the Napoleonic Wars.
